A variable APR is often tied to the prime rate. The Prime Rate, usually based on the federal funds rate set by the Federal Reserve, is currently 5.25%. So a credit card might have an interest rate of 10%+ prime, giving you a rate of 15.25%. If the prime rate goes up, so does your credit card rate. Some cards will have a variable APR and others will have a fixed-rate APR. Variable rate credit cards have an interest rate that is tied to an index such as the U.S. prime rate. When the U.S. prime rate changes, the interest rate on those credit cards will change as well. A credit card with a variable APR may change monthly, quarterly or yearly. This card has sneaky interest rate policies that you should be aware of prior to getting the card.
